  16. Grande Danse Macabre des Vifs, La

    [c.1905-c.1909]

(32.3 x 24.2 cm). Portfolio comprised of four volumes, each with a frontispiece + 10 engravings (most with captions and/or dedication) Issued in two states: watercolour (20 x 14.5 cm) and in black (28 x 20.2 cm). Printed in a limited edition of 100 copies, numbered and unnumbered, the order of the images in known copies varies.

The volumes were published separately between 1905 and c.1909 but because of their extreme scarcity it’s doubtful 100 copies were ever printed up. Only four are known to exist, which are currently in private collections. About 1910, the remaining sheets of all four volumes were gathered together and issued in cloth chemise boards with the following motto lettered on the front board: “Hatez-vous d’en rire, de peur d’etre entre d’en pleurer” (Hurry to laugh for fear of being among the crying).

Not in Kinsey or the British Library. Although some have attributed Charles Carrington as the publisher, the more likely candidate would be Jules Chevrel due to the type and quality of the production.
