Louis Malteste was born in 1862 and died in 1928. From the late 1800s into the mid-1920s Malteste's artwork has graced theatre posters ("Les Mauvais Bergers"), crime novels ("Les classes dirigeantes", 1906), adventure/travel magazines ("La Côte d'Azur", 1907), and French satyrical magazines ("Le Rire", 1900). But he is probably best known for his flagellation illustrations and sometimes suthor of the same titles using the pseudonym Jacques d'Icy.
The earliest illustration I've found by Malteste is on the cover of the French magazine "La Caricature" dated 9/9/1893, and a fabulous colored lithograph titled "Marchande de lacets", 1897.

The author has been falsely attributed to Hugues Rebell [Georges Grassal]. It has been suggested that the author is Hector France [Mendes: 160-A]. A French adaptation was also published by Carrington in 1901 as "En Virginie"; as well as by Jean Fort, also in 1901, under his imprint Collection précieuse. One bookseller's holding contains the plates in three states [possibly the 89 copies on Madagascar). Preface by Jean Hervez [Raoul Vezé]. Limited edition of 1290 with 89 on Madagascar. "Les Faites et gestes" is the title of the final part of a three part work called "Confidences reciproques, ou Anecdotes de la Societe de Mme la Comtesse de B***, published in 1774. "Les Faites et gestes" was published separately in 1818 as "Ma Vie de Garcon." The ascripton to Crebillon is disputed and Caylus has been put forward as an alternative author [Patrick Kearney].
